Smile Alfa Romeo 155 Q4 Upgrade (Springs, alloys, Big Brakes)

    Greetings everyone!

Im new here, just registed yesterday. Got to tell you all that this forum is awsome, never seen anything like this. Just bought an Alfa Romeo 155 Q4 2 weeks ago, and im loving it, unfortunatly its slightly in poor condition, some oil leaks from engine, gearbox and transmission, electrical malfunctions...But I think its no big deal..Gonna star to disassembly the car this weekend, fixing all this small things. The car is from 1993, got 92000kms, but has been stoped for at least 4 years. gonna start at the engine bay, replacing timing belt, filters, oil.
The previous owner was using LIQUI MOLY 10W60 engine oil, i know its a good oil, but i think you guys should know better, so, what should i use? by the way, you know some good online shop to purchase gaskets, oil filters, timing belts, that kind of sutff? Probably gonna start upgrading the car for the end of this year, starting with suspension, wheels, brakes, maybe a squadra chip, since the car is fully stock. Any sugestions are greatly welcome since im from Portugal, and i dont know anyone ho has an Alfa like this one, just got some friends with lancia integrales ..

Keep up the good work! This forum is awsome

    Welcome.
This is an extremely quiet part of the internet but the resource is pretty vast.

    I think a good oil is a 10/60 Synthetic:
    [ame]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motul-7100-Synthetic-Ester-Motor/dp/B002LGMARM[/ame]

For parts there are a few good suppliers in the UK:

    http://www.walkers-garage.co.uk/
    http://www.tancbarratt.co.uk/

Good luck with the project. I expect it has been in a good climate so may not have suffered from much rust?

Please post updates and photos of your progress.

    Thanks,
    Jack

    Thanks for the reply jack!

Was a short weekend for me to work harder on the car. The car is in good shape, not much rust except the wheel bolts...with the age of the tires they must have been tigh really hard for a long time..tryed to remove the front wheels to check for brakes/suspension, unfortunatly the car has those kind of anti theft lug bolts witch i only have one spare key...after alot of hits with a hammer, heat and rust spray, tryed to unscrew it with a 1.5 meter steel tube and broke the special key for the lug bolt...later i was able to remove it with a drill...

Well, need to replace the front plastic splash shield panels, and the front bumper needs repair too.

Some pictures of the car and progress.

Your car looks awsome wrinx! How is the project running? Need to find some nice wheels too for my alfa, but ill keep the standard 4 bolted ones, I think they are 4x98 correct? Dont know if ill chose the 16 or 17"...I have seen that brake setup in other cars in this forum, is it good? Im aiming to do some track days in the future.. cheers

Thanks, sadly the project has stalled for the past two years while I sort my garage and work etc.

4x98 is correct, some people think 17s ruin the handling and prefer 16s but I think 17s are fine and you'll probably need 17s to fit over 166 brakes...which are awesome!

    Default Brakes

Hi guys, im working on the brakes at the moment, aiming for the 166 calipers, found some in second hand for 250 euros. And gonna try to buy a new set of wheels (mille miglia 17" 7 4x98), i think they are ok for the price, comes with tires (260 euros second hand). Dont have much money atm to buy good rims.
As for the brake discs, the correct reference to buy them is from the fiat coupe 20v turbo? 305mm/28mm 4x98 right? Ive found some thec drawings for the brackets: http://www.shrani.si/f/3N/PJ/RNSEWXZ...o-bracket2.jpg

    Is this the correct one?
And for the discs, any sugestions?

Here´s the link of the wheels: http://olx.pt/anuncio/jantes-17-mill...tml#236a2075b9

    Thank you for the tips!

305mm (sometimes advertised at 304mm) with 4x98 is correct for the discs.

You could buy the brackets very cheap here if he is willing to make more sets:

    Welcome Chuckie [img]https://forum.flitsservice.nl/images/smilies/dag.gif/img]

It’s good to see that enthusiast people know to find berlinssportivo and do a proper introduction. That's a good looking Q4 you've got there

That sounds familiar It's way beyon 7 years now
And even forgot the twentieth birthday januari this year

Sam shit over here, though I did find a new job Still a difficult market, project and orders are staying behind Thankfully it’s a great company and I hope can stay here for some time (years). Great colleagues. Garage is full with parts and a project waiting for some action and a lack of time.

    Welcome to the forum .
If you have integrale friends, so you have right friends relating to engine and transmission .
The oil, which AlfaJack showed in the link is for 4 stroke motorcycle engines! The climate in Portugal is warm, so you should be fine with 10W-60 oil. 10W-60 is "heavy" oil, but for old engine in performance car, which will be pushed it is the most recommended and used grade (as far as I have read and know). I go for Motul Sport 5W-50 ester oil for both my cars.
You can get parts for the car from most big car parts shops and that specialised in italian cars. But some parts are more difficult for finding. If you ask for site for online orders, I have make 2 orders from "mister-auto" site and was very satisfied with the price (for particular parts and because of that order from them). Here is the link for your local office of this site -> http://www.mister-auto.pt/pt/.
About wheel size. Unfortunately for me, the space for wheels is very limited in 155 . 16" look like best compromise between look, performance and ride quality for this car and I think is mostly used. Also big brakes can fit under 16". With 17" you have to run very low profile tires and they will be very close to wheel arches and if the roads there are not so smooth ... My car is lowered with Eibach springs (-30mm) and have 215/40-16 tires (bought the car with them and they are smaller diameter than original) and the car is very low. I also have 17" wheels, which plan to install with new 215/40 tires and this will be really tight fit and will have problems with bad roads here , but I want big wheels and big brakes, so have to live with negatives.
250E for Brembo calipers from 166 is a lot in my opinion! I can source you such calipers from here (or other model) for lower price.
One performance car is not enough ...

    So it is! Sorry.
This is what I meant to link to:
    http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-89787-mo...ngine-oil.aspx

It might be overkill. I put in a cheaper oil but change it more regularly.

Thank you all for the tips! I´m aiming for the suspension at the moment, dont have any progress on the car, my wife had surgery last week and didnt have time to continue . But its all fine now.
So now got this "to do list":

-Need springs/shock absorvers. (ive heard about the eibach springs, probably will do, part numbers are welcome or websites with references)
-Searching for a nice bush kit for suspension.
-Wondering if it exist any anti-torsion bar upgrade, since i dont have any atm.
-Want to remove the catalic converters, and make a full stainless steel exhaust pipe 2.5" or 3"?
-Is there any camber kits for the alfa 155 q4 that anyone knows about?

For those that removed the engine from the car, what is the best way to do it? upwards or downwards of the engine bay?
Gonna try to take some good pictures of the progress.

    Once again, thanks!

I took the engine out of the top with the gearbox and transfer box attached. I believe it is easier to lower it out the bottom though.

3" stainless would be good. The removal of the cats makes a nice difference to the performance!

    You can buy camber bolts:
    http://www.revolution247.com/powerfl...-155-pfa100-12

    Wishbone bushes:
    http://www.powerflexshop.com/car/alfa-romeo/145-146-155

I think Eibach springs are harder to get now - I don't know what the next best option is though.

Most kits that are listed for a V6 are also suitable for the Q4.
Have a search here for mention of thicker Anti-roll bars - they are not easy to find either.

Damm, its really hard to find suspensions for the car. Just sent an email to eibach asking for the springs, found this old thread: http://forum.berlinasportivo.com/showthread.php?t=2208

And sent the codes to them, when i get some feedback ill post here.
Im affraid to lower the car more than 35mm, dont want a good looking tunning spec, im looking for good performance.

Found this Ksport kit intresting: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASSETTO-REGO...item5890cc1d27

Its expensive and, for a coilover kit maybe the car will become very hard. Anyone got a good feedback regarding to coilover kits for this car?

    Cheers

Just found a Portuguese company that sell the eibach Springs. They are asking for 301 Euros with free shipping for the 4 springs. Is it a good price?

If anyone needs heres the link for it: http://www.qf-lda.pt/

Just bought the Brembo brakes today, gonna refurbish them.

I guess the price is good if they are the only company selling them in your country, but please check they actually have them in stock. Several people have tried to get springs for Q4s and paid money only to have to chase for refunds for a long time when the company can't get hold of them.

I think they got them in stock, they are going to deliver them today or tomorrow.
Finally this weekend i was able to remove all the 4 anti-theft bolts from the wheels, and now its ready to recieve the new wheels/big brakes upgrade

Made some progression at engine dissasembly, trying to fix all the oil leaks.

I think i got some kind of water spary system near the intercooler

Im thinking about removing the EGR system, it should be a good thing to do right?

Gonna try to find selicone hoses to replace the old ones.

    Cheers
