K&N advantages: Flows more air when dirty, just needs cleaning now and again. Might be worth an unnoticeable 2 bhp at 6000rpm, but only if the surface area exceeds that of your original.
Disadvantages (over paper): Noisy, doesn't filter air as well, more expensive to buy.
I have this one:
It was custom made by another Q4 owner. It consists of an industrial filter plus some welding in wich the filter fits nice.
You get the blowoff sound from the turbo with something like this, and the car seems to get some more air in.
The filter just lies there. It is pretty secure i noticed.
Jan, that looks very similar to mine, apart from mine is a BMC F1 cone filter. More noise from the induction side of things, but can't comment on what performance benefits as it was fitted at the same time as some other stuff.
I see you also have the same sparco strut brace and cracked HT lead cover.

Putting in a cone filter will make you suck in warmer air. This will make your car actually suck in less oxygen than with the standard filter, since that sucks in cold air from the front. Put in something like a high-flow filter inside your stock air-filter box or a BMC-CDA with the intake somewhere in the front of your car.

Actualy at one time I had stephan lenior (from squadra-tuning.) in my car with this filter. (while driving on the road, and using the throtle quite a bit. (after driving it the opposite way checking for cops. )
He was wondering if the filter got in to hot air.
So we hooked up his reading equipment.
He was actualy surprised the air stayed pretty cool.
(Het got a realtime temperature readout on the equipment.)
Most of the air going into the filter seemed to be comming from the side bodypanel parts on the outside of the car and not from the engine side.
So the cool air-stock filter comment is not really ment for my car i guess.
And my strutbrace is the only part of the car that is rusting...
(The round parts were the bolts go in to secure the thing.)
The airfilter with the blowoff sound remains great for scaring small children and animals though.
And somebody in a golf diesel with some body modifications and a R32 badge. He probably still is pale in his face and doesn't dare to touch the accelarartor at this time.
The need to replace the HT lead cover still has not found me.
