    Default 75/SZ rear brakes.

Just checked on the rear calipers for a 75 I've got in the garage. It looks like they are a 2 piece casing that is bolted together.
I know the SZ/RZ has vented rear disks, but the question is, are SZ rear calipers the same as the 75, apart from a spacer between the 2 halves to increase the gap to allow for the thicker vented disk?
Land Rover do this to allow basically the same caliper to be used with vented/solid disks.

Interesting question...and one I've wondered about but from the opposite perspective

My thinking is the same as yours, that they are likely to be the same except for the different width spacer, but without a pair to look at I can't be sure.

If you're thinking of fitting the SZ rear discs you might want to reconsider, they're hard to find and VERY expensive...c. ?350 a pair.

    I found this page :
    http://home.wxs.nl/~evdbeek/sztech01.html

sounds like SZ/75 calipers are the same with just a spacer between the 2 halves for the SZ. Might be useful if you ever need new rear calipers as used 75 calipers might be a little more common.

But bloody hell those rear disks are expensive, any reason for it? Apart from the fact that they are going to be small diameter vented disks.

On a similar brake related note, does anyone know if you can get replacement brake caliper pistons? The muppet that owned the car these brakes came from seemed to think it was a good idea to use the brakes with no pads there at all. Braking was carried out by the pistons clamping directly onto the disk.

The page you found is the SZ "bible".

I'm guessing they're expensive because there are only 1200 or so cars in the world that use them, so manufacturng a batch will be expensive...oh, and SZ/RZ rear discs don't wear out very quickly either

Just spotted this place over in the USA, Performatek , rear vented disks are $171.95 a disk. Which works out at about £220 for the pair.

I'm not sure if SZ/75 rear vented disks are the same, but if you were going to the trouble to manufacture them, I think you would try to make them compatible.

I think the rear calipers are the same though, apart from the spacer on the SZ.

I'm pretty sure that I've seen someone reference those disks with regard to fitting to the SZ. Whether they are worth pursuing all comes down to the Tax and shipping from the USA.

Well they are based in America, so they are probably having a few problems reading an email with the correct spelling of words.

I'm happy with my Tarox Sport Japan discs (not vented, but drilled and "sliced") run them together with EBC greenstuff pads - Good braking power, also for track day events

Thats good to know, are you running the standard front calipers or the Brembo ones from the 75 TS?

Just sent them another email....oddly, if you put one of the GTV6 discs into your "cart" to buy they are renamed ES30

Someone on the Alfa BB forum linked the site in response to my question about sourcing ES30 discs...so you could be right about them being 20mm wide.

But, I've found somewhere in the UK selling a pair of discs for £200, but they're drilled, which I don't really want

Due to some of the issues I'm having working on the GTV, 2 steps forward 1 step back type of thing, I'm gonna just get the car back on the road first without making too many modifications. And of course I'm just not sure that the car will ever warrant having vented disks at the rear. Its not all that heavy after all.

Besides even if Powertrek do only have a few left, they aren't exactly items that are going to go flying out of the door are they

Thats a good price for any set of discs delivered from Italy.

In the end I just went for a standard set of rear Brembos.
