Ok, how on earth do you get to the union at the compensator...dropping the subframe looks favourite unless there's a work around, undoing the compensator itself looks likely to damage the other pipes if everything's tight??????

I replaced the lot. When I tried one of the 4 on top of the compensator it just snapped off.
What are your plans? I would recommend renewing the lot.

Yes, I'm doing the lot now...just ordered a bucket of unions
That being the case, I guess I can just remove the compensator and start from there?

Yup...IIRC there are two different types of male union on the compensator. M10s and M12s.
