    Default Early 164 Turbo cars.

I've been reading today that early 164 2.0L turbos used the same 2.0L 16v turbo Lampredi engines as the Q4/Grale. Spotted a pic of one in this book:

and it appears to have a distributor hung off the end of the inlet cam. Has anyone got any more info about the engine in this installation?

Yes, have only seen this on Integrale 8v's though.

EDIT: I said that from memory but not actually sure if it is right though as can't find any photos to back it up. Never knew about these getting put in a 164 though!

I guess it was for the Italian market and their tax rules. I can't ever remember seeing one in the UK. But if you think about it, the same engine went into Lancia Thema and Fiat Croma so why not the 164.
Would make quite an interesting car if you swap the engine for a 16v and then tune it.

I have driven the 164 2.0 V6 turbo and it has the best of both worlds
It really drives fenomenal and with the style of the 164

There's a very nice example of a 2.0 8v turbo here in Finland and I got to drive it a bit. It has a Leda Suspension custom suspension and slightly wider tires. It is really an amazing car and provenly quick around the track. My 164 V6 cloverleaf feels big and clumsy in comparison. The turbo feels light and nimble and drives beatifully. It really opened my eyes what a great car 164 is.

Got a couple of those engines. have fitted one in my Croma. so have pictures and a running car with a 8v turbo. shortblock is almost the same as the 16v only because its a mark one means no balance shafts and slightly different crank flange.

I just canīt get this reply work... I have wrote this post several times and it never shows at forum If this works now, I will later write little bit more about my car.

Here is few photos of my -92 164TB and yes, itīs the same one which "finn" wrote earlier:
    https://picasaweb.google.com/1015144...Romeo164Turbo#

Ok. now it seems to work

Basicly this is 3.0 V6 with 2.0 8V Croma/Thema turbo engine. There is only 2488 made and those were mostly sold in southern Europe. Mine is only one in Finland and nearest I know is in Norway.

My 164TB is now almost stock except Leda coilovers and 17" wheels. In future I will restore it back to original.

Glad its working for you now, can't seem to see anything in the forum logs about the problem.

Were these cars produced to fit under an Italian tax bracket, or was that the 2.0 V6 turbo cars?

Yes, these are made to fit under Italian taxes. I think that Alfa used first these 4-cyl. engines to see if there is any market for that kind of cars and Fiat/Lancia already had right type of engine. After that they started to design own V6 based turbo engine which is been used in 164 Super, 166, GTV and spiders.

Has anyone driven both the 4 cylinder Turbo 164 and the V6 turbo engined one?

Be interesting to see how they match up.
