I am about to remove the gearbox, but can't get the speedometer sensor off! I suppose it is the 24 mm aluminium "nut" that shoud be released from the 30 mm steel muff, or?

That looks correct but maybe it needs a little bit of heat to release it. Not too much as it may break the sensor, question is, what is "too much"Sorry not much help
