Hi. I want to remove the steering wheel airbag in my Q4. But there is nothing in the manual on how to do this. Can someone give me a run down on it? Is there a specific fuse for it?

Thanks, JimN~

- Undo your battery (both leads)
- Wait 20-30 minutes...have a cup of coffee!
- take off the centre piece (three recessed allen bolts behind the wheel).
- remove airbag capsule (from memory: turn anti-clockwise like a light bulb)
- disconnect horn wiring
- Undo centre bolt (but leave it on a couple of turns).
- remove wheel (leaving bolt on stops it smacking you in the face when you have to get brutal with it!).

That's about it, there may be something extra to do with the horn wiring but it's obvious once you're in there :)

....just realised you only want to remove the capsule! Similar steps...can't find a fuse listed in the owners handbook but you'd be better removing the thing itself imho.

If your taking the wheel off, make sure the steering lock is off as it stops the wheel being detached if the keys are not in the ignition. I learnt the hard way and had a fight with it.

Wrinx, Thanks for the concise description of how to do this! I'll have a go at it this morning! As far as I know my car is a "skinny" - but I've never seen a "widey" so I'm no expert!

Being a car for the Japanese market, I think your Q4 is a little different to most of the european/south american ones we have on here.

There are a couple of Japanese Q4's in the register, I'll see if I can get hold of their owners, might help clear up a couple of your issues.

This is not necessary, the airbag is a non electric version. It works with a shock/pressure mechanism. Also there is no diagnostic check with the computer of warning lights. It can easaly and simply be removed.

Does that mean you need to be extra careful getting it out then?

I have MY 1993, so I dont think I have an airbag. Can I just remove the airbag from an airbag equipped steering wheel to replace my original steereing wheel with it?

ECL may have answered your question...but yes, so long as you can make the wheel match the Alfa column you can fit anything :)
