View Full Version : Q4 Thermostat

Need a new engine thermostat and they are out of production.

What do you think I should do?

I could phone round everywhere but the likelihood of finding someone with one sat on the shelf is pretty small - Mangoletsi (UK Alfa dealers) told me that eper says its unique to the Q4

65-70C engine on the motorway isn't all that bad but its certainly not right.

Any help or suggestions?

Cheers
Jack

can'y believe that they would use a completely unique stat for the Q4, a grale or fiat coupe one must physically fit. Also 3rd party/ pattern manufacturers must do them.

I'll have a look through the old version of eper I've got to see if I can spot anything.

Firstline do one P/N is FTS149.86 but it looks like a replacement thermostat rather than a complete replacement unit :D :D

I will look in to this, also wrinx found this - might be the easiest route!

Looks like it's been designed by the same people who did the 16v thermostat!!! Bloomin' 'orrible!

As posted on 155.org...surely the Coupe 'stat is similar enough???? Don't suppose anyone owns a Coupe and can compare

Fiat Tipo Sedicivalvole has the same from the outside. Don't know what temperature does it open but can't be too different.
A guy from here openned one of this and changed the spring in a Tipo. I'll try to get some more info.

Thanks Juan. I am still hoping to get more info on the Fiat Coupe 16v T one, it looks so similar.

Does anyone know if the internal bit is replaceable?

I ask as I could buy this:
http://www.firstline.co.uk/op3/product_set.php?mode=1&type=PV&mmeid[5]=35&make=Alfa%20Romeo&model=Alfa%20155&subvariant=-&product=Thermostats

Problem is, I do not know if its a mistake? I guess its going to be cheap so I could just get it and try...

That?s what I?ve said, or try to said, that he changed the internals.

I had the same same problem with low engine temp. on a highway and searched for the thermostat as was told is out of production.

We found a thermostat which is labled as Coupe 20V

Sorry for the unfinished post.

I had the same same problem with low engine temp. on a highway and searched for the thermostat as was told is out of production.

We found a thermostat which is labled as Coupe/Delta 16V turbo, but it did not had a turbo cooling channel/whole and one more whole for one of the coolant temperature sensors that were missing. The body and the piping was exactly the same. So we "fixed" the the new unit from these two "faults" and replaced the old one.

It says Behr Thermot-troniks Italia as a producer. Could be an option to replace the old one.

I'll post some pictures of the thermostat I replaced old one with later.

How did you "fix" the new unit?

As I thought, thanks :smile::cheers:

So we have another way to get a thermostat....just need to see if Jack's plan comes together and decide which to use ;)

I've been watching this develop and as I work in Scotland and it's starting to cool over night and I need a new thermostat too.

The best option I've found so far is the fiat coupe 2.0 16v IE thermostat as all the fittings are in the same place with the exception of the EGR sensor, which you can do away with or as posted above drill and tap.

Nope the main pipe didnt unscrew, instead it just turned, no hope of fitting the part that FirstLine list - the pipe you need to remove is press fitted, so now that iv tried turning the pipe I have broken the seal and it leaks, so car is off the road untill sorted :(

It will have to be the Coupe route I think!

Though I dont know who is going to drill those holes out - i bet its not easy!

Pavs you mention the Coupe 2.0 16 IE - and mindus, you mention the Coupe 2.0 16v Turbo - are they the same?

Even the turbo water feed?

the Coupe 2.0 16v N/A has a hose connection from the same port as the turbo cooling one it is just a case of unscrewing the one supplied and screwing the Q4 connection in

Don't know if they are the same. If the turbo cooling channel is missing, they're the same then ;)

Should be careful when drilling, better to drill on kind of drilling bench than using a simple drill(any car workshop should be able to cope with that, IMHO).

No you misunderstand, the 2.0 16v N/A coupe thermostat housing is the same as the Q4 with the exception of the EGR sensor socket

AlfaJack

All done. If anyone else needs to drill the hole for the sensor you need a 14.5mm drill and an M16 x1.5 tap.

Got a constant 87c when on the move now :D

Thinking about doing this job now as my temp reading is normally around the 70deg area unless in traffic

Pavs...have you noticed any benefit without the EGR valve?

Glad I checked this...was about to buy a 16v Turbo thermostat....it's the normally aspirated thermostat as I've already removed the EGR system :D
