Hi. I have looked through the manuals on the site here and can find nothing on how to remove the gear shift knob on a Q4. I've also tried just pulling it up to see if it would come off - but no luck. I want to replace it though as mine looks very ratty. Has anybody accomplished this seemingly simple feat? How do you do it - can you use generic replacements?

Thanks JimN

Just pull, and pull a bit hard, worked both my TS 155 and the Q4 ;)

Yep, just give it a big tug and it should come off. I've got a momo replacement knob , just fastens on using 3 grub screws if I remember correctly. Use a drop of treadlock on the screws to stop it coming lose.

Ask the victim himself... I said too much already :)

well, this is all well and good, but I still haven't been able to get the damn thing off bu pulling it! I hope I don't have to cut it! I assume that the small fitting on the gear lever that you have to pull up to select reverse gear is separate and stays on the shaft?

The Jap spec Q4 must be a little different from the UK/Europe ones. Mine is a 1994 model and it doesn't have the lift collar to protect reverse gear. But then again it didn't have the supportive seats that yours seems to have Jim.
I've never taken the knob off one with a collar before so can't say for certain that it doesn't need a screw to come off in your hand.

(Right boys, quite frankly I'm disappointed, we are 10 posts into a thread that has words like Knob, gonads, coming off in your hand, and screw and yet no one had made even a slightly smutty remark.)

At the risk of getting back on topic, does anyone know for certain that knobs with the reverse protection collar pull off as well?

I guess you could always try and warm the knob up with a hairdrier to 'unstick' it, or give it a whack with a mallet to try and free it up some.

I find a good lubricant usually works well...

I think the knobs with a collar pull off the same as those without...kinda like circumcision

A can of silicon lube is useful at times like this. Smells nice as well

I think someone ought to notify said victim, of the existance of this thread and ask him to explain himself.
