View Full Version : Which oil filter?

I have just changed my oil and fitted a new filter.

The new filter I have is part number: 46805831 - This is the one that the ePer disk and the dealers (I phoned a couple to make sure) say the Alfa 155 Q4 needs.

However, the filter I took off which was provided by Walkers Integrale dealers is part number: 46805828 - On ePer it is listed for the Integrale.

I dont know why they have different filters, but there is a difference:

The 46805831 filter is a little taller than 46805828 and it does not have the valve inside it.

What have you got? What should I be using?

I have fitted the 46805831 filter and it seems ok.

Thanks
Jack

I had this worry/conversation when I bought a filter from Evocars once. Not sure why there is a difference, but the upshot was that you can use either filter without any worries.

Cheers Steve, thts a relief :)

I have a feeling the grale filter is fitted vertically so needs a valve to prevent it draining - might be wrong but thats the impression I got from Evo's this afternoon, wasnt too clear though.

I use oil filter for yugo 45 with valve for couple of years on my marea's modified engine and on my q4

there are 2 valves in a normal oil filter. A non-return valve and a bypass valve. If i had a choice, I'd get the one with both valves in it, even if it's smaller. If you engine drains it's oil from top to bottom every time you switch it off, it'll be running a lot more on low oil pressure. And a filter without a bypass valve is a BIG no-no, these are capable of starving your engine from oil when they get filled with dirt!

New part number to add the the mix. I have been sent one for a Fiat Coupe 16vT, it is:

71736164. This one looks like it has a valve.

Also, I think number 46805831 has been replaced by 71736160.

Strangely, Coupe isn't listed for that p/n on my ePER

Same here but if you look at Coupe 16vT specific that number does comes up. ePer is a bit of a devil to deal with though...

"Devil" is a bit too nice for ePER, everyone seems to get different results

I went through the oil filter issue last time I did an oil change, here's what I figured:

The original (coupe) 16vt filter: 46805829 has been replaced with 71736164, which if you search for in eper it doesn't seem to come up. However if you go to lubrication, then click the oil filter part no it shows the replacement number. The revised filter (71736164) is the one I am using.

i use a mahle filter bought from a car part supplier up here. It's been recommended to me by motorsport people. Don't know any numbers though. And if your filter gets full of dirt your not changing it often enough
