Just found this whilst trawling around the internet,

"If a vehicle is registered before 31st July 1995 and has had the CAT removed, as long as that vehicle is not on the emission database, then a NON-CAT TEST is carried out using the same values as pre 92 cars."

And in the UK the Q4 isn't in the emissions database, so if you've got a pre 31st July 1995 car, you can take the Cat off and still get an MOT.

However you need to make sure that the MOT tester enters your VIN number rather than just using the date of manufacture.

AND from further reading with regards to the law, it isn't illegal to remove a CAT so long as the car still passes the relevant emissions tests.

So what are you waiting for?

Steve, Thats some great info, I will have to speak to the MOT people next year, the UK has a fully computerised mot system now so I am not entirely sure if the Q4 is still not on it :? Il ask Speedy on alfa155.org - he does MOTs :D

Question: Is this date of registration or dat of build. My car is an import and the UK registration date is 24/04/1998 although it has an "N" registration.

my friendly local MOT man passed mine (93) car with no cats,

said something along lines of,
if its registered before aug(?) 95 it can fail a test for cats then reverts to a non-cat test which it can pass (or something along those lines, it was a few weeks ago now)

Just bumping this thread as the car will be undergoing an MOT test this weekend...!!!

Previous owner had trouble getting it through an MOT and had a "racing" cat fitted....though not got around to removing it yet, so may not have any problems :)

I'll be printing this out and taking it with me

Speedy reckons it needs to fail on the computer and then be found for the non-cat test....which re-reading the info above, is exactly what it says...except for the "database" comment.

I'm confused....
