As mentioned in previous threads, I am keen to see some discussion on the Alfa flat for engine, the cars that use it, and the sporting heritage associated with it.

I regard the Alfa boxer engine and the cars that use it as an interesting evolutionary path that Alfa pursued for almost 20 years.

The design and technology invested in this interesting engine and the cars that used it, make a good comparison to other Alfas of the same period (also with interesting and unusual engineering aspects). The fact that Alfa was prepared to invest in so many diverse power plants is starkly in contrast with modern automotive development where components such as engines are often shared across ranges and even manufacturers to keep costs down.

Economically, it seems to have made some sense, with Suds, Sprints, and 33s being some of Alfas biggest selling products worldwide.

So here is a section on Berlina Sportivo to explore and discuss these cars.

I am working on a couple over the summer months and will post progress with the projects here:
- Mild prep and tinkering on a 33 16v ready for a 155 Mallory Park track day, possibly followed by some further developments with the car
- Rust removal and paintwork on a series 2 33 SW Cloverleaf
- Stripping for spares of a 33 P4

I will also research any racing heritage I can find. I heard that 33s were in some kind of touring car series in the EU, so will make that my starting point.

Interested to hear what others know of these fascinating cars

Ahh fond memories of the 33 P4 I owned for a short while. I picked it up needing a little welding on the inner wing strengthening brackets, and with non functioning power steering.

The strengthening brackets turned to metal cornflakes as soon as I touched them, and the power steering was just a corroded joint on the pipework which meant it dumped the PAS fluid as soon as you started it up.

Both were easy to fix and the car was a blast to drive. I only got rid of it as I was coming over here to France and it was getting close to me needing a car transporter to get all the cars over.

I do seem to remember changing the plugs was an absolute bitch. Adult sized hands just didn't seem to fit.

Aye, my first Alfa was a 33 P4.

My brother-in-law had been playing with hot hatches, and ended up with a supercharged Lancia (Beta Volumex?) and a Strada Abarth. I went for a Renault 5 GT Turbo and then we got sensible - He got an 8v Integrale and I bought a 2 year old black 33 P4 from Black and White in Newbury.

He managed to write the Integrale off on boxing day of whatever year that was on black ice and going over a curb, down a ditch, and through a hedge backwards. In the meantime I was lowering the 33 (back end height always looked silly to me), and putting an Autodelta SS exhaust on it.

I kept it for about 18 months and then traded it for a 155 V6 (K840 VND - Anyone know it?). Not sure why, but having said that, loved the 155 and only got rid of that hen it started to fall to bits - traded it for a new 145 1.8 TS which the wife had for 5 years.

It is possible than Van now owns the P4. I have photos of the car I owned but nothing showing a number plate, so we are still trying to work out if it is the same car. Number plate seems familiar!!
