It looks like there is enough interest to get this off the ground and sorted now.

So I need to know from all of you guys out there whether you want a front, rear or both bars?

It will be payment before ordering as usual, and I will need to know how many people want the ARBs before I can give you a final price.

No news on the price just yet, and given the amount of interest I think we will be able to push for a good price.

Then I might join for a complete set.
What's the diameter of the sway bars?

I want both but may only be able to stretch to a rear depending on how "good" the price is :)

No response back from the manufacturer just yet about the price, but I'll try to get hold of them again on Monday.

I'm keeping a list of everyone who has expressed a preference on here, so don't worry I won't forget anyone.

Pedders have been back in touch with me now. The front bar will be 28mm thick, I'm still waiting to hear back about the rear bar and of course the prices.

As soon as I know more I will pass it along to you all.

28mm is very very thick, isn't it?!
As far as I know the Eibach arbs for Alfa 155 (without Q4), which are really good ones, have 26mm front / 22mm rear. This is very thick already.
The 28mm is about 50% stiffer than original?! Isn't this a little bit much?!

I'll add you onto the list Dave.

Can I just ask all of you who have expressed an interest in the ARBs to keep an eye on the thread. I just want to make sure we can progress things reasonably quickly once the manufacturing has been agreed.

Shouldn't we have 30mm? i rather have 30

Q4-Dave
22-10-12, 10:40
I agree with Jan, the thicker the better as I intend to use my car on trackdays and "active driving" to and from.. Understand It might get a little stiff on rainy days but a price I can pay for that wicked feeling of unlimited grip and power durin g corners without sliding out..

Steve Webb
22-10-12, 18:06
I'll give Pedders a prod to see if 30mm bars are a possibility. The best result would be that we get a choice of bar diameter.

Brul(tm)

30 mm sounds good I guess.
Maybe they can give some advise on this?

Stichl

I never have been on a race track so far - therefore I am not experienced regarding this topic. But in Fiat coupe forum meanwhile there are some "experienced" people reducing their thick front arbs again?!
For example this (there are more threads with this topic in this forum):
http://www.fccuk.org/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1374976&page=1
As I stated - I am not experienced - but problems of Fiat coupe should be similar to the Alfa 155 problems - it's the same underfloor and almost same suspension.

They talk about rear arb's!
24mm for rear is nice because it's also heavy at the back and 4wd!

Stichl
24-10-12, 06:55
Sorry, I meant this comment ..."Note that I don't run an uprated front ARB - this just promotes understeer, so I sold the Dedra ARB and reverted to standard" - and there are more of these comments in other threads of Fiat Coupe Forum.

We are going to have to wait for the answers from Pedders, at the moment the guy who is looking after all the details is away in China.

Sorry for the delay, but hopefully we should get some more details through soon.

Just heard back from Pedders, the front bar can be done in 26,27,28 or 30mm.

Obviously it would be best if we only put the order in for a couple of sizes, so what sizes are people interested in?

He thinks the rears can be done in the same sizes as well, so please let me know what you would prefer front and rear.

alfa155chris

Stichl

24mm rear, please.

Ade
03-12-12, 22:08
Interested!

I'd like the rear stiffer and some compliance left at the front..... so would like either a rear, or maybe front and rear, but with the rear more uprated.

What are the diameters of the standard parts?

SteveNZ
03-12-12, 22:16
Are you getting these from Pedders in Australia? Whiteline is generaly more popular and better respected for competition suspension parts. They stock 22 and 24mm rear bars. I've seen a few fitted to Tipos and Coupes. Iv'e never thought about uprating the front bar. What are you guys trying to achieve with the front bar?

If they come at a decent discount I'm keen on a rear bar 24mm. We should ask if they can do 24mm brackets too as the original ones don't fit on anything larger than 22mm.

Alfa_Ahead82

For fast road/track day I think that is better a more thick rear arb in proportion to the front. With too much thick front arb the car tends to understeer....

The problem is that the Q4 ARBs are different to the regular 155 ones, both front and rear have got humps in them to clear the propshaft \ rear diff. The whileline ones listed are for all 155s excluding the Q4.

As far as I'm aware the Q4 only shares the ARBs with the Lancia Dedra Integrale, which curiously has a slightly thicker front ARB.

When the Dedra ARB is fitted to the Q4 along with a strut brace, it really tightens up the front end of the car, giving a more positive turn in.

SteveNZ
05-12-12, 02:28
Does the Q4 bars fit all the models then?

Are you not woried about understeer? I like to add a larger rear bar, just to make it more neutral. I have tried everything from a 16mm to a 24mm in a Tipo and even with the 24mm it will still tend to understeer in the dry.

David ARTC-215

Interesting! Although I'm a bit lost as to the measures and the reaction of Q4.

Personally, and this is only in my limited experience, the whole 155\Tipo\Dedra monocoque just doesn't have the torsional rigidity to apply the normal handling formula.
I can't be the only one to have worried when they've jacked up one side the front of the car and then tried to open the door.
All I can say is that when I stiffened up the front with a Dedra ARB and a strut brace, and then added a little more toe in, the front end of the car felt much more controlled, gave more confidence when turning in and seemed to grip better. The Dedra ARB is only slightly thicker than the Q4 one, so an even thicker one might help more or it might not.

If you compare the front setup of the 155 to the rear, the rear is by design a much better starting point to hang suspension from as its all hung from the one subframe, and the subframe is pretty beefy to start with.

Just my 2p worth.

Sorry I don't understand how much thicker are the OEM arb...

Steve Webb
06-12-12, 16:31
As far as I can remember the standard front Q4 ARB is 22mm for the widebodied cars and 23mm for the skinny. The Dedra front ARB is 24mm.

I don't want to put an order in for a lot of different sizes, so I suggest that we go for 2 sizes, 26mm and either 28 or 30mm

The standard rear is 19mm if I remember correctly, so what about 24mm and 26mm for the rear.

Thoughts?

I don't remember which was the ARBs size that Jim used to have for his race Q4. Maybe his experience would enlight us.

Steve Webb
12-12-12, 19:41
I'm pretty sure that Jim didn't actually go all the thick with the ARBs . I recall a post where he stated the sizes. I'll take a look for it. He did remove a lot of weight from the car though, which will make a difference.

SteveNZ
12-12-12, 21:11
He also used very hard rear springs. That car did not have an issue with body roll.

Steve Webb
13-12-12, 10:04
The car was also just a track car, so there would be no concessions at all towards comfort.

I should have some more news about the bars this afternoon, so everyone keep your eyes on the thread.

Alfa_Ahead82
18-12-12, 09:01
What do you think about 26mm front and 26 rear for track day use? Is too much? (for the rear). Keep in mind that the Q4 at rear is heavier than a standard FWD and I think it require a thicker ARB... Do you think so? I don't want the car understeer like oem setup; I want a "neutral behavior"... Or another solution maybe is to take only rear ARB (maybe 24mm) Sorry, but I don't know what is the better choise.

I'm also interested. I got a 30mm front ARB never fitted but my felling says its to hard. Im building a car mainly for trackdays so some input from Jim Nielsens car would be great.

Steve Webb
31-12-12, 17:18
I'm also intressets, I got a 30mm front ARB for some resan Smith My car but Macbeth 28mm in front and 26mm in the rear is enough. Worldpress be Greta to get input fr.o.m. Jims car.

Whoa, not sure if you outwitted the translator there or posted whilst under the influence. :lol-052:

So you've already got a 30mm front ARB? How well does it work?

But you think that a 28mm front bar and a 26mm rear bar would work better?

And you'd like some input from Jim (Nielsen?) Well I should be seeing Jim sometime in the next couple of weeks so I'll ask him.
