I recall mention of a CO trimmer on Q4s, is this correct? If so, how low can these make the CO readings go?

Reason I ask is that an MOT tester ran my car through on a cat test but had told me it was a non-cat test...it may be a genuine mistake but the car failed :(

Perhaps I can turn the CO down enough???

The Co trimmer is a small grey box on the bulkhead (sub-matchbox size) Not sure how much of an adjustment it actually makes though.

Does your Q4 still have Cats on it?

There is a grey area in the MOT when it comes to the introduction of Cats, and the Q4 falls into it. If you remove the Cats, you can pass a non-cat test even though the car is post 92. If that makes sense.

Yes, I've been reading up on that, it goes on the date the car was first used...and mine is a month outside the 01/08/92 cut-off.

Cars used 1992-1995 (iirc) have to be a perfect match on the machine but, the "Cloverleaf 4" isn't listed on the UK MOT database, it's just "Cloverleaf" so should have a non-cat test, which mine had two years ago and passed fine.

But this year there was some reluctance and lots of head scratching, I'll have to see what happens on saturday when it goes for retest.

I had that on one of the last MOTs I had in the UK, the guy just went on the age of the car, decided it needed a Cat-test and it failed. Once it was pointed out that the car wasn't listed, it passed the non-cat test.

Unfortunately over here it is listed so the cats needed to go back on. Well once every 2 year at least.

Until the MOT tester is shown the way to do it they always seem to get given a Cat test. I took a print out from the 155 forum where Speedy had posted the info. Unfortunately not all MOT testers are as clued up. They might think you are trying to scam them. "Cloverleaf" on the UK database is probably the Q4 listing but unless it is exact as the cars logbook (mine states "Cloverleaf 4") it should not be used.

Yes, as mentioned above, it should be an "exact" match...I reckon he thinks I'm trying a con but the same chap (who is a nice chap) tested it before

If you go to the 6th post of this thread http://forum.berlinasportivo.com/showthread.php?t=1116 there is a pic of the trimmer as fitted to the car.

In place of CO trimmer I found this

Can someone identify what is it as it looks different from the pictures I've seen.

Looks like it to me. The adjustment screw is under a cap on the top of it if I remember correctly.

Unusual not to see the cap disturbed!

It does look different to the one in this pic posted by Nick (RIP):
http://forum.berlinasportivo.com/showpost.php?p=8548&postcount=6

However, it looks more like the one fitted to my Q4.

I wonder what signal it sends to the ECU?

Last night I went to a local workshop to test the emissions. I tried adjusting with a thin screwdriver from the hole beside the cap

And to make it totally embarrassing I actually saw the values change... to worse.

It almost passed the test even though the two cats are totally shot. Just in high idle the CO was a bit too high (it was 0.35 when it was supposed to be 0.3). Going back for a retest on friday to test the trimmer.

I've booked a time from an exhaust shop for a new 3" ss system with one cat and a silencer at the back.

The signal interests me too.

The green hose is connected to the presure sensor for the waterspray on the intercooler ;)
