View Full Version : Rust proofing.

It looks like I'll be pretty much stripping the whole of the underside of the GTV, so I thought it worthwhile to give it a coat of something. Obviously if this was an everyday car used in all seasons in the UK I'd need to go overboard to keep it in one piece. BUT the car is only really going to be used as a toy, and then probably only in good weather.

So what would people recommend using to keep the underside in top condition?

Cheers

Have been readin about this recently and found the following advice/procedure to stop it reoccurring:

1. Wire brush/abrasive cleaning will make it look like its gone but it is probably still there in surface imperfections.

2. Once mechanically clean I then use a rust neutraliser, pick your favourite, phosphoric acid, vactan, Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 (that's mine).

3. You can then apply "paint", be it a zinc based like Steve suggests, epoxy 2k etc.

4. Then waxoyl/stone chip.

That looks like a useful 'how-to' although I'll probably not bother with the waxoyl as like I said the car won't be out in rain very often, if at all.
