View Full Version : The Quickshift kit: Fitted

Further to comments about problems fitting the Quickshift (not just this one, the shop bought ones are the same), here's what I did with the BS prototype:

Straight Bracket (note the position of the top bolt).
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/01.jpg#

Angled Bracket.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/02.jpg

Both fitted.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/03_neutral.jpg

Here's the problem, the linkage rod hits the surrounding metalwork, 1st gear won't engage properly.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/05_1st.jpg

3rd gear...does engage, just, but hits the red bodywork.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/06_3rd.jpg

5th gear is ok.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/07_5th.jpg

Here you can see where the linkage is hitting the bodywork, the white line shows where paint has been scraped.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/08_marks.jpg

The white line is a useful mark, telling you what needs to be removed, I started filing in the middle.

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/10_filing.jpg

Keep checking if 1st goes into gear.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/11_trying.jpg

All the filing took around 15-20mins with regular checks for progress until it looked like this, my finger is about 20mm wide.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Shortshifter/12_15_20mm.jpg

Now it works...1st.

2nd.

3rd.

Hi all!

I haven't fitted my kits yet. So I thought I make a photo with both kits.

The left one is the kit from Japan, the right one I have received today... :thumb:

They are very equal!!! :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

One of them will be fitted into my Q4, the other one into my GTV...

I wish you all a "short shift" and a lot of fun!

Best regards, Martin

I have encountered the same problem. I've solved it by pushing the iron sheet up, so that the controls have enough space.

The problem is that with the excitement I forgot to take pictures, ainsssss, sorry.

Hi boys

Very nice news for me!

I'm glad because you already made quickshifts!

I made mine by myself but a little bit late, I moved to Dubai now and progress with my car are stopped...

Hi Santino, I thought you had been quiet recently. Good luck with everything in Dubai, can't imagine the heat and dust out there in the summer would suit the car, or you either.

Fitted the kit yesterday. Installation took about an hour. A little adjustment was needed on the bended bracket (very little!) and on the body, but it was no problem.

I've driven around 150 km since installation and it works like a charm!

Thanks to everyone involved in producing this kit! :)

Well by my reckoning you should all have your kits now. Glad they all got out to you without incident and they seem to be fitting ok.

Its always a relief to hear that projects like this get a good reaction. Would be a real knightmare, after all the work involved, if the kits weren't any good and people didn't like them.

wrinx
02-06-12, 18:35
Gearchange on mine has always been REALLY sloppy, the kit has reduced the slop by shortening the amount of of movement, and made it feel much more "clicky" and positive...so I like it!

I seem to remember a few years back, well it was when AlfaOwner was just starting out so it must have been 10 years or more, the fad was to cut down the gearstick. Never really fancied that myself as you're not really solving the problem. So glad to hear that our solution is working out well.

wrinx
05-06-12, 00:03
Never quite got the cutting mod either, I felt that reducing the lever would just make changing gear harder!

Well, finally had confirmation that all the kits have arrived safely now. So its a big sigh of relief here that everyone got theirs, and those that have fitted them like the results.

Well done everyone involved.

Glad this came up....it may prompt me to sort mine out. 3rd gear feels very notchy.
I also suspect the connection on the gearbox is a bit loose and worn as there is slop in the movement.

I have been thinking about this and looking on ePer (thank you Alfa Club, Slovenia (http://pekidi.com/navi?FORCED=TRUE&KEY=STARTUP&COUNTRY=1&LANGUAGE=3&GUI_LANG=3&SAVE_PARAM=LANGUAGE#)) I don't actually think there are any bushings on the gearbox end?

I am going to change the oil tomorrow so will have a better look at everything then.

Well I was wrong, there is a rubber bush there which has worn on mine allowing a lot of free play. I didn't get a chance to check the other though.
Need to try and find the part number now...

EDIT:
I could do with these:

Dead easy to make...if you have the dimensions!

What are the symptoms...lots of movement/sloppiness in the gearlever positioning? If so I have the same problem

Pretty much that. Difficult the engage first gear too (kept getting third). I have bled the clutch since but not driven it.

I think once I have the dimensions of the part it will be something that can be sourced.
How would you go about making it? A project for your lathe?

wrinx
23-04-17, 08:47
Yes. The steel tube might be available off the shelf in the right size but failing that can easily be turned to size from something close.

If you get me some accurate sizes we can experiment.

 That would be great. It will be a few weeks but firstly I have to do a complete brake service, all the belts and new rad on my JTS SW. That's then going off to my dad and his 156 1.6 SW is going to my sister for her initiation in Alfas.

Seems like everything rubber based is going to need looking at sooner rather than later, still not a bad lifespan, 20+ years.

AlfaJack

I am thinking about trying to make these out of liquid polyurethane if I have any left after remaking the middle propshaft bearing support (http://forum.berlinasportivo.com/showthread.php?1624-middle-bearing-that-support-the-driveshaft&p=27889#post27889).

Well I eventually found that some Fiat Coupes [early 20v 5sp box and 16vt] have the same arrangement and a member of FCCUK has made up the bushings in brass. I have bought and received them (£24 delivered) but yet to fit them. I have a small reservation about them as there will be no give in the connection that there may have been with the rubber bushings. I'll give it a go and report back.

Be interested to hear how the new bushes feel compared to the old rubber ones.
What do the Coupe boys say about the change in feel?

AlfaJack

Finally got round to fitting the new brass inserts. However, I have found that the gear stick, when disconnected was extremely stiff when moving side to side. Back and forth is fine. I've put a load of oil in to the mechanism which it is still fitted and it has improved a lot but in the end I went a little further and took the whole mechanism out (3x 8mm nuts under the foam padding).

It turns out mechanism that provides the lost movement for the side to side was completely seized up. The only movement I had was slippage again the nut with serrated washface.

Its all cleaned up and moving freely now so look forward to getting it back in the car.

Question...what type of grease would be best to pack this all out with again?

I'd go with Moly, or Graphite grease, just look for one that is designed for sliding joints, but to be honest, thats not under a lot of stress so anything should be up to the job.

Has cleaning it all out make it feel much better?
