1993 Alfa Romeo 155 Q4 (2011-12-01 21:30:44)
Any date for its road worthyness?
No :(
I was hoping it would be ready this year or early next but funds won't allow it. :(
Mechanically it's ok, unless the lay up has caused any problems, but the bodywork needs attention.
wrinx
Body work I would hope is relatively cheap, especially if you are fabricating bits yourself. Hope it is ready for the 20th anniversary! ;)
Awww, you've set me off thinking about it again
Might have to drop Kloonsy a PM....

Hi!
Nice car! Nice mods! Yours!!! Not that ones of that "155 enthusiast" from who you bought it. I saw the pictures...
Best regards, Martin
Thank you...yes, it was a bit grim
wrinx
Update time...car went into the body shop about a month ago, I'm hoping for some news soon.
It's being converted to widebody for a couple of reasons. Firstly, good rear quarters for skinny cars are almost impossible to find...but I guess mine could have been repaired by a good body man.
But the real reason is the new look I want for the car....widebody, with the following bits added; can you guess what it is yet?
Wheels...

Wheels...
wrinx
looks for me as almost the same design as TI.Z version
; can you guess what it is yet?
Steering wheel...
wrinx
easy... Sz/RZ :)
Correct...well 99% ;)
The wheels are the same as the TiZ but a different PCD so I need to mess about with them a bit.
The steering wheel is the same as SZ/RZ...but also TiZ ;)
The steering wheel and road wheels are both very rare...

Correct...well 99% ;)

ok so what kind of other cars had them ?:D
These came from an Alfa 166
I think there was a different 5-stud wheel fitted to the 916 GTV or perhaps 164 but not sure about that.
wrinx
Yes, and Lancia Kappas...that it's.
Looking at the ET these could have come from a Lancia but I doubt it.
Just need to find a way to fit the things now!

If everything just bolted straight on it would be boring and wouldn't be worth the effort would it?
But then again it would be nice if something fitted straight away now and then.
Wrinx, nice project. I'll be waiting for news about the it, wheels are going to be a headache, but at the end it's worth to have a TiZ.

Nothing I do is ever easy
Still trying to fit my ramp in the garage

Such a nice steering wheel, enjoy it!
Cheers,

You've not got the hang of this haggling have you?
Still I'm sure most people on here would love to be able to get hold of that steering wheel for €80.

Big plans eh ! i didnt realise yours was as already "modded" as that,
my Q is were the cams worth the expense?
i keep thinking of buying them (when im not thinking of selling the car that is :s )
The plans have changed for it now, widebody rear wings are on and the conversion will be finished when I get around to replacing one of the rear doors and both front wings.
I've since replaced the 33 P4 steering wheel with a Momo Zagato (same as the SZ and TiZ) and have another set of wheels to fit, like the OZ Zagatos (same as TiZ wheels)...but not sure I can make them work yet!
Not sure about the inlet cam, it's reduced power/response below 3k revs but I'm not passing full judgement until the mapping is configured to include them.
One thing I might do is lose the stainless manifold, apparently they have worse flow than the OE cast iron versions!!!

Where did you hear that nugget of info, and is it restricted to one particular type of tubular manifold?
It only refers to the Chinese made manifolds sold a couple of years ago, "designed" by a chap in the UK.
The tests were reportedly done by Guy Croft but I haven't seen the report myself, think I read about it on here though...
wrinx
The GC designed and produced manifold is £2000:
http://www.guy-croft.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2787
£2k!
Note the comment about the "other" manifolds.

I wonder why it isn't ceramic coated to help with heat control?
I'd be really interested to see a comparison between all the 'major' Lampredi tuners favorite manifolds.
nice to see the engine in that GC post running a Kappa inlet manifold too.
Update...
Bought some of these, been looking for a set for two years! Oz Zagatos...
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Oz%20Zagatos/Tyres.jpg
The Oz Zagatos don't fit with 166 Brembos, by this much, when they're spaced to clear the caliper...
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Oz%20Zagatos/ZagatoWide.jpg
So, the Brembos have gone, to be replaced with Wilwoods. There's only 40mm of clearance with these wheels so I've stuck the standard 5mm spacer on the front, 45mm should be enough. In this picture the rears are without spacers:
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Oz%20Zagatos/Zag0mm.jpg
This one has 15mm spacers to the rear, still 5mm to the front:

Oh and those oil cooler pipes look a little crunchy!

As Brul says, HID unit...they make a huge difference :)
Yes, the pipes are FUBAR, but I also noticed the bumper hanger is a bit squiffy too!

My Q4 is NOT a catwalk queen
Thats as it should be. Cars are meant to be driven not polished.
Sadly it doesn't get driven as often as it should either!
Currently on SORN (off the road) and being treated to some new bits to get it through the MOT....drop links, wishbones, CV boot, front wings, replacement brakes etc

Beautiful wheels! Where to find them???
Steve Webb
17-06-13, 08:00
Yeah well I should have said they need to be driven/worked on rather than polished (Especially red ones, too much polishing leaves them pink)
Beautiful wheels! Where to find them???
From a guy in Holland...I've been searching for years!
wrinx
wrinx
do you know weight of the wheels
or can you measure it
The guy I bought them from weighed them at 12kg each for the post, without tyres.

What Wilwood model is? With these calipers you can install the Speedline original wheels?
They are Dynalites...they will fit under Speedlines with 300mm discs, that's how this set was being used by "Speedy". The only problem is the discs have to be bells and rotors and some grinding to the lower balljoint!
But, they should fit the standard 284mm discs easily...I'm having to use them because the Zagato wheels are so shallow (40mm clearance).

Next job is to fit the braided rear flexis (fronts already done), bleed the system and then remove the inlet cam prior to MOT test!
Might also need a wheel spacer a millimetre or two wider

Very nice work there, but why not powder coat these items as they are a common fault for rot?, I take it, they are on as a mock up.
Been trying to bleed the brake system but the pedal is still spongy, replacement master cylinder is on the cards now
But, the wheels now clear the Wilwoods properly after making some DIY wheel spacers
A pair of used 284mm 4-hole Alfa pattern discs.

nice work!!!!
Hi man,
First must say that its great work!
But have one question.
Can you say what have you done with adapters for brembos of ar166?
Welcome to the forum :)
I still have them, not for sale though if that's why you were asking..sorry.
wrinx
I like your idea of making spacers from the old discs.
I can see one possible problem though, haven't you lost the centre location (spigot) for the wheel?
It's close! There's about half the spigot left but with the chamfers it's damned tight...if all else fails I'll revert back to the standard calipers after thoroughly servicing them!
Although I do have another plan for the spigots...
Really ought to update this thread, I'm onto the bodywork now!
wrinx
Bleeding the brakes turned into a real nightmare, ended up replacing the master cylinder as a precaution and bodging up a pipe to connect the Easibleed to my compressor...two big air bubbles popped out straight away and the pedal is now rock solid
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Hosted/CopyofPressurebleederadaptor_r.jpg
Also replaced the clutch slave whilst I was in the area, the circlip broke when I removed it
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4_InletManifold/circlip.jpg
Replaced coil packs and earthing straps too...

Decided to put the front end back together, new bumper mounts because the old ones had seized and needed cutting off!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4%20Bumper/Rebuilt.jpg
Then I re-manufactured the tank straps form 2mm stainless steel...those suckers won't rust again!

Finished pictures tomorrow, hopefully...

Oh dear :?
Finished the repair panel today and tackled a few more rusty areas under the rear of the car, usually covered by the fuel tank...the twisted wire wheels for grinders are excellent!
Started on the inner chassis rail, added a bit of rust converter:
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/floor03.jpg
Then the fuel tank mounts, plastic grommets were removed by screwing in a 10mm bolt and pulling them out.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/floor01.jpg
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/floor02.jpg
Then the drain holes which are a usual point for corrosion:
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/floor04.jpg
Cleaned up a couple more areas and slapped more "Bondo" on!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/floor05.jpg
The finished job...final paint and stone guard to be done after I've completed the boot floor repair by the wheelarch.

Managed to squeeze a bit more metalwork in today (last productive day of two weeks holiday!)...

It occurred to me, whilst trimming the repair piece, that I've done this job the wrong way around, I should have fitted the boot floor piece first, then the lower arch...never mind, it's all a learning experience!
wrinx
Decided to get serious with it now!
Everything removed ready for dropping the rear diff and subframe tomorrow.
Crusty!

Anti-roll bar bolts; always a bit tricky but these came of with a bit of care...and an Irwin on one!

Anti-rollbar off...how thick should they be, I reckon I've lost 2mm in rust!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/sub13.jpg
Had a quick five minutes play with the grinder and wire wheel, it should clean up ok.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/sub14.jpg
The only question remains...wire wheel and several coats of enamel paint or sandblast and powder coating. Ignoring the effort and time involved in the former is the latter really worth the difference? I've read of it chipping easily and not lasting very long :?
wrinx
Did a bit more today...removed rear diff and rear subframe, stripped the rear arms and removed the bearings.
But first, couldn't resist another picture of the Oz Zagatos...damn they look good!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/car01.jpg
Today's job, remove the diff and subframe.

Big empty space!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/sub16.jpg
Decided to remove the rusty tube and clean it up, the wire wheel is great, but...
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/tube01.jpg
...when the wires fly off, they draw blood! Eye protection is essential.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/tube02.jpg
Cleaner.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/tube03.jpg
Finished and being treated with Deox Gel, the black areas are the small areas of rust left despite all the wire grinding.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/tube04.jpg
Primed with Bonda.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/tube05.jpg
While I was waiting for the Deox Gel to work I replaced the bottom spring pan bolts which were more than a little worse for wear and usually shear off, they simply knock out.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/bolt01.jpg
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/bolt02.jpg
That only took a minute, so turned my attention to the spring that had been in the tank for a few hours; ready for spraying.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/spring01.jpg
Onto the rear trailing arms, stripped all the bits off.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm01.jpg
This is the bearing that needs to be removed, mine had a fair amount of play in them, the top of the wheels were leaning in!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm02.jpg
First one removed, what a mess; the grease had solidified!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm03.jpg
Second one looked better, side by side.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm04.jpg
This is the race, still in the arm, form the bad one shown above...another mess!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm05.jpg
A second rough bearing.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm06.jpg
Next, the races were removed from the arms, this one had indentation marks from the roller bearings...perhaps made on fitting??? Very odd.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm07.jpg
Confirming the bearing code...same as other 155s.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm08.jpg
Off to the pub tomorrow!
wrinx
Update time...
Bumper is a bit bright!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4%20Bumper/red.jpg
wrinx
Nice! I want one to! Have ju just cut away plastic ore have you "weld" some in?
I cut out the holes and bits inside the bumper, then filled the gap with expanding foam and bodyfiller on top.
If I was doing it again (might do in future!) I would look at plastic welding some pieces in.
wrinx
Didn't get to the pub, so another day in the garage...
Wire wheeled one of the trailing arms, grinder seemed much smoother today :hs:
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm09.jpg
Primed it.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/arm10.jpg
Etch primed the rear springs.

Pressing out the bearing...
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/bear03.jpg
...and it's out!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/bear04.jpg
Race still on the hub.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/bear05.jpg
Out with the grinder.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/bear06.jpg
When it's thin enough (heat marks indicate thin stuff), a sharp tap with a hammer and chisel will crack the race and release it.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/bear07.jpg
Also stripped down the subframe...
These had to come out.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/frame01.jpg
Hit the large ones hard enough and the top cracks off and the rubber punches through.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/frame02.jpg
But not the smaller ones, which also needed the 6t press.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/frame03.jpg
Out!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/frame04.jpg
wrinx
Not much done today, started refurbishing the rear calipers ready for painting red, trailing arm bearings arrived. their arrival confirmed everything that's been posted so far.
Caliper refurb started.

Bearing shared with other 155s.

But not the long bolt!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/bear09.jpg
wrinx
Spring removed and in the bath.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/sub03.jpg
hi wrinx
Im follow your works
could you tell me detail about this?
a plasic case
in some water?
negative side on part
positive side on a iron part?
how many volt and current u used?
how many hours waiting?
This is where I got the information from:
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/andyspatch/rust.htm
I usually leave the parts in overnight, wirebrush and put back for another night if it's necessary.
It's not the fastest method, but it's the cleanest! If I need something in a hurry I use a "twisted knot" disc in my grinder, but that's very messy.
wrinx
Liking your work, I've got the same job to do myself this Summer, my thoughts and experiences are:
Rotary wire brush is hard work (tough on the hands too) and tends to polish which isn't a good surface for paint to cling to, we've got a 225 litre drum which I fill with Deox (we buy and sell in bulk so it's much cheaper) so I just throw parts in that and leave them there.
If I want them quicker we've got an aquarium heater I bung in to heat it up, it speeds up the process greatly. Before we remove working engines for reconditioning I add it to the water system and run it round for a while so it de-rusts internally.
I've found this: http://www.rust.co.uk/products/category/28117/epoxy-mastic-rust-proofing-chassis-paint/#
Which i'll be ordering today to paint everything with, there's an independent test on there which rated it highly.
Spring coils tend to sit on one another which is why they rust so easily, rubber tube pushed on the ends can help for a while. I wondered about zinc plate but worried about 'Hydrogen embrittlement'. I dipped my rear calipers in the de-rust tank, then zinc plated, then painted black, they've lasted really well. I figured they weren't particularly pretty to look at and always dirty with brake dust so matt black was best.
Keep up the good work.
That looks like good stuff, wish I'd found it before spraying my springs form a rattle can!
The wire disc I use in the grinder doesn't polish as such, it's quite an aggressive tool, particularly the wires when they come flying out!
wrinx
Yeah I know all about it - been there, done that! They're great for removing underseal and seam sealer, but the out of balance wheel turned my hands numb and tingly after an hour or two.
I found the best Etch primer is Tetrosyl btw, we got some grey stuff in a spray can for touching up and it didn't survive the scratch test. The Tetrosyl refuses to let go and you can even weld near or through it.
While you have your car in bits can you measure me the distance between the strut fixing holes (centre to centre) on the front hub uprights? Doesn't have to be too accurate.
It would be useful (for everyone) to know what they are. I know Fiat Coupe are around 73mm and suspect Q4 is a lot smaller, but not sure.
Thanks for the tip, I needed some quickly and bought Upol from the local Halfords!

wish you'd asked me this last week, before I put the wheels on
I made it a rough 72mm by placing a pair of calipers on the bolts...so 73mm is looking good!
wrinx
Thanks, I was laid on the floor with a tape measure so I wasn't so accurate either, if it was different it would be a lot.
It's looking likely that the Fiat Coupe suspension fits your car then, which if it does it opens up some more opportunities for you guys.
They fit the non-Q4 155s as do 916 uprights, several have used them to fit Brembos without messing with brackets.

Thanks :)
Couple more updates...
Everything has now gone from the rear end...
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/Rear_empty.jpg
The rear jacking points were noted on the last MOT, they are a bit rough!

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/OSRjack.jpg
Couldn't resist scraping off a bit of underseal...not as bad as I thought it was going to be!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/Underseal.jpg
I'm struggling to see the point of the void by each jacking point, towards the front of the car. I might just weld a blank over the space as it's just a moisture trap at present.
wrinx
Nightmare job, spent about two hours on this and don't seem to have made much progress. Apart from sandblasting, is there an easier way to do it? I've tried the knotted wheel and heat gun but neither were any quicker and the former is very messy.
Currently using a woodworking chisel, to be followed with the knotted wheel to clean up where necessary:

Not much done since Sunday as I'm not well (which is why I found it hard work!)
Finished painting the arms, two coats of Smoothrite. I'd fallen out with Hammerite products over the past few years but am quite happy with how it went on these...not sure how hardy it'll be on the road.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/armspainted.jpg
Then cleaned up the threads in the hubs with a couple of taps and squeezed the hubs into place.

wrinx
Thanks :)
The job just keeps on growing...
wrinx
Still not much done, just a bit of pottering and painting with the complicated handbrake assembly.
Plenty of Plus Gas and cleaning to get the rusty bits apart then started off with the knotted wheel, followed by electrolytic derusting, etch primer and a couple of coats of Smoothrite.
Bracket.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/bracket04.jpg

wrinx
Dismantled the rest of the handbrake assembly today, ready for de-rusting and painting...what a complicated system! Are all 155s like this or just Q4s?
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/handbrake01.jpg
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g118/wrinx/Q4/Q4_RearSubframe/handbrake02.jpg
Also started cleaning up the rear diff casing...not sure what to do with it though, preference is just to leave it clean(ish!) rather than paint.
wrinx
This is all your "fault"...!
Some of that definitely looks familiar
I've seen a picture of another 155 with all those holes cut out, it was on track...where did the idea come from?
wrinx
I saw this in a thread on the Swedish www.alfapower.nu and thought it was kinda cool.
Think you'll find the car runs much cooler...mine did anyway!
wrinx
I was think of your pics as I was working on this one today:

Bearings? What bearings?
Eeek, that looks a bit grim!!!
