First reaction to that is no, I don't think they are the same. Certainly not the bottom rear support.

no
the Q4 are filled with oil
the others are rubber

what is the idea with oil - would think rubber would be stiffer?

Steve Webb

no
the Q4 are filled with oil
the others are ruber

Which engine support is oil filled? Never heard of that before.

The outer gearbox mount is rubber, so is the lower rear support.

came to think that maybe the enginemounts is the same for the fiat coupe 16 v turbo?

the top tie rod is far too weak on engines that produce 300+ horsepower (at the wheels). It allows too much engine rotation that puts a lot of twisting into the exhaust system. You really set it best on a dyno..

jim..

Do you mean the rod is too weak or the bushes holding it in place?

sorry.. no the rod is plenty strong enough, but the rubber is far too weak. It occurs to me that the vacant sections of the rubber could be filled with urethane ... I must do that next time I have the mount off. I did the exact same thing with my failed center driveshaft bearing rubber.. perfect fix and free..

Just insert the bush 90' further round than it is supposed to be, job done.

A cost effective Pikey mod is to fill all the mounts with PU sealant, they stiffen up a treat, not that I would ever entertain such a thing

no sure I understand...could you explain

what do you mean by that? could you explain (think it it my english that isn?t good enough)?

I think this is what Evodelta means:

If you look at the pic below of a bush

http://i625.photobucket.com/albums/tt333/CJJ326/MGTF/Technical/Torque%20Tamer%20bushes/TorqueTamer11.jpg

You see that the bush isn't solid, but is 2 rubber rings joined together by 2 rubber sections. If you rotate the bush in its housing the rubber joining pieces will be in a different plane and will be in a better position to withstand the torque.

However given that removing bushes is always a pain in the ass job, filling the holes with sealant might be a better/easier option. That will mean the inner rubber ring will be supported on all sides, not just in 2 places.

Sorry Peter, been too busy to visit just lately, Steve has identified the modification correctly. (thanks)
Be aware that stiffening engine mounting bushes in any way will increase 'NVH', this is noise, vibration and harshness.

A couple of links here:

A 'Pikey mod' is something which is not 100% the correct way to do things, but if you see as the only way is ok to do to your own car, but not really anyone elses without telling them.

The mounts on your car will probably be contained in a steel drum, you can drill holes around it and inject PU sealant in there to make it stiffer.

Oil filled mounts are "hydraulic mounts". They act like a shock adsorber.

Jim, the lesser models don't even have the top stabliser! I re-engineered mine with a suspension arm!
