Sorry to those that visit the other Alfa sites, you may of seen this before:

I am starting a full re-spray project on the Q4 and will document the progress here and on the 155 forums. Never used a spray gun before so not expecting gleaming results but will hopefully look OK.

Wash it:

De-baged and De-Spoilered (it's a heavy bugger. The boot lid is light as a feather now!):

De-Skirted:

Found a crack in the paint pot - so very glad I found it the easy way! Have emailed the company the pic:

DA sanded on a big chip in the paint:

Good luck Jack, where are you going to be doing the spraying? In the garage or a are you going to rig up a spray booth?

Only ever done a little spraying before, prep and patience and you will do fine.

Going to be spraying in the garage - not the ideal place but should be OK.

If you grab yourself some large decorators plastic dustsheets and some duck tape you should be able to rig up a fairly decent spray booth. Be worth it given all the effort you are going into in prepping the paintwork.

Hi Jack, got any further with the respray recently?

AlfaJack
20-06-11, 11:35
Not really unfortunately. Maybe more this weekend then things get busy for many weekends after that.

It is off the road now and will be sorned for a few months so I can do it slowly.

Have rubbed down all of the off-side and bonnet, plus skirts, a new mirror.

Going to remove the bumpers next and spray all these bits separately then roll the car in the garage.

Bit more progress...more rubbing down:

Won't get a chance to do any more until August now.

Where is the honeymoon then? Persuaded her that a motoring tour of northern Italy would be a good idea, or going to loaf on a beach somewhere?

AlfaJack

Loaf and beach :D

Then a month later we have a month in South America :)

Bit of an update - have actually sprayed some paint now, all-be-it primer:

http://www.cloverleaf4.co.uk/images/uploads/21307.jpg

Good side, nice and solid:
http://www.cloverleaf4.co.uk/images/uploads/21308.jpg

Bad side, mounting point is solid so will clean up and put some rust stopper on as a temporary measure:

Bumper was a bit buggered but now riveted back together with metal plating on the inside:

Looking like you are getting on well with things Jack. How are you finding the spray gun? Can't see any runs on what you've done so far.
I've always fancied having a car finished in primer grey, tempted?

Hehe, not that tempted no :D

Spray gun seems really good except it has given me a pretty big blister. I was using one finger to pull the trigger when there is space for three.

No real runs yet, might be a different matter when the colour goes on!

AlfaJack

Some more.

Painted up the wing and other trim bits. Not sure on the finish I have got though - I thought it was OK (given I have never sprayed colour on anything with gun before) and that it will flat back smooth for a good polish but my dad says I can get better - smooth finish out of the gun? Don't know what to adjust really. The finish is consistent all over.

jack, isn't that 'orange peel' effect as we call it here cause by spraying too thick a mixture? The paint will produce runs easier with a wetter mix, but will have less orange peel..

Steve Webb

Looks like orange peel to me as well. How far from the panel are you holding the spraygun, and what was the temp when you were spraying. Looks like there wasn't enough thinner in the paint when you sprayed it or too much of the thinner evaporated from the mix before it hit the panel.

Just my 2p

Yes, have also found out that the pressure I am spraying with is too high. Will try again tonight :)

Interesting colour there, why isn't it in the forum garage? Get it stuck in there.

You should be able to save the paint you have done so far Jack, but its probably best trying to sort out your mix\settings\technique for the rest of the panels.

Shouldn't you be planning a wedding as well, not hiding in the garage? :nahnahna:

I'd say the orange peel effect is being caused by the compressor running out of steam, it's what I would call "dry" rather than orange peel. Let the compressor charge up and don't paint to much in one go.

You'll be needing to get a buffer and polishing compounds like G3 and G10 to cut the paint back to a super slick wet look, that where the real skill is. Many a poor coat of paint is saved by the polishers skill.

AlfaJack
15-08-11, 22:25
Flatted it back tonight and turned the pressure down by 20psi - was a touch high for a HVLP gun. The finish now is much better :D

The compressor is a fairly big beast so doesn't charge up too much.

The finish I was getting was worse that I thought. A microfibre cloth stuck to it like velcro!

Agreed...my Uncle has a Healey with an 8cyl Jag conversion, he painted it bright red from rattle cans and sent it to a friend for finishing, looks like a pro-finish now.

Use it to rub down the other panels...

At the risk of getting this thread back on to car related ground, has anyone else found that the bodywork on the petrol filler side of the car tends to be in worse condition than the other side?
I've got corrosion of the rear wing on this side, whereas the other side seems fine.

So is it down to a chemical reaction with petrol\fumes escaping from the filler, or is it down to the fact that the other side is close to the exhaust so gets heated up and any moisture is evaporated off?

Oh and remember, when a man gets married, he wants his wife to stay the same, then gets upset when she changes.
A woman however gets married wanting to change her husband, then gets upset when he stays the same!!!

As you were everybody.

wrinx

Yes, they're all worse on the filler side...Q4s that is!

My theory is the fuel vapour degreases the panels

This problem occurs also with the normal models of the 155's.
Had a couple of 1.8 8V's and a 2.0 8V with the same problem.
If I remeber correctly, the Savali 3.1 had the same problem.

I agree with you that it probably has something to do with spilling fuel or something like that.

Marc

A quick update as other will have seen elsewhere:

Starting to get a shine - roof and OS rear quarter done (only flatted in the pic) so far...I like to take my time.

Maybe another 6 months and it will be done!!

The colour looks great but the photos make it look poor due to the resizing and compression.
