Or more a mystery for me ;)

Today I was disassembling the gearbox and front differential from the spare engine. When the clutch became visable I saw the following clutch (valeo).

Wich was quite a surprise for me, I didn't expect a three padded clutch:?

This clutch seems to be eating the pressure plate :eek:

The clutch I took back from the garage last time they replaced it on my Q4, looks completly different and as far as I know is close to original (also a Valeo clutch)

This clutch didn't leave any wearing to the pressure plate.

What kind of clutch could this be, the one that I removed?
Is it a "racing" or competition clutch or one for a different type of 155 :?

It may be a bit difficult to see on the pictures, but is this the wearing when using a racing clutch? the survace is far from smooth. The fly wheel needs to be machined if I want to use it again :frown:

Anybody got an idea?

I wouls guess the "racing" clutch pads are a harder compound than the OE version, so perhaps that's why the pressure plate has suffered more wear.

Clutch fingers are worn on both, but slightly more on the "race" version too.

'spare engine' eh? that would be nice...Is there a model / part # on the three paddle clutch?

It should be a ceramic disc...
I had a ACT 6 puck rigid ceramic disc, it had a superior grip untill the last minute, but flywheel was torn out after some 5-10k km of daily driving... Pressure plate went to scrap, flywheel had to be remachined.

Nothing unusual. The harder compound is wearing the surface like harder compound brake pads wear out brake rotors faster.

It could be a custom plate, Valeo centre with the aftermarket friction surface. Ive had one or 2 made like that, but with 4 or more paddles.

It looks like one of the centre springs is rubbing on something too.

Its a sintermetal clutch you have there.

Sintermetal clutches have a tendency to wear the surface of the flywheel and the pressure plate.

And a three pad sintermetal clutch, is just to ask of it! :eek:

(I now you didn't knew..)

So - if you want to drive with a sintermetal clutch - a minimum of four pads it is!
