View Full Version : Front wheel bearing removal

After getting the car back from its weekend out at Winton - I have noticed that one of the cv boots on the front gearbox side drive shaft had split in half leaving a messy grease residue over everything - after i removed the driveshaft so that I could check the CV joint and replace the grease and boot, I noticed that the bearing in the front hub is a bit wobbly and a bit noisy - so I'd like to replace it.... in the manuals the best I can find is this diagram... but its not Q4 specific. Here also is a picture of the reverse side of the hub.

Is anybody familiar with the process of removing the front hub bearings..

looks like you have to remove the hub from the car, remove the circlip - that you can see in the pic .. but what next - do you then use a puller to pull the hub from the upright? or do you use a press to press the hub out from the circlip side? Looks like the bearing is a specific one - can you buy replacements at a local bearing shop or are they an alfa-only part?

hope i'm not the first to do this :(

I think its, circlip off then use a big press. I bet Alternative Autos will sell a new one - get it on the same order..I do not know if its specific to Alfa, I didnt know it was splined..

Yes, press required as far as I know...never done one though.

the bearing is not alfa specific. You can get one at a local bearing shop, at least i did.. Did not remove it or install be myself though, but didn't pay much for it either.

The bearing is the same as Marea.
I bought them in a bearing shop just taking the original one.
Tonight at home I can give you the SKF part #.

And yes, you have to use a press.

Thanks Juan - I should have one by tomorrow. Unfortunately the original bearing didn't quite survive removal.. It was in VERY tight!

Fitted the new bearing today. As you can see it is indeed SKF BAH 0004 B.
