View Full Version : De-rusting parts
I've been experimenting....apparently coke and vinegar can remove rust from metal. So, I've bought some Hammerite rust removing Gel and some vinegar
This is the item...radiator support bracket, heavily rusted and in a bit of a mess!

After a quick wire brushing...

I then applied several coats of the green Hammerite slime, think I've dome something like six or seven coats! This is the front slam panel...which really needs shot blasting!

This is the result so far...

Can't say I'm impressed, so next experiment is with vinegar!

Try some phosphatic acid, thats the best way to take rust out.
Not heard of that...just looked it up
Will give it a go...is it readily available?

very impressive and I presume it does not remove any non rusted metal.
Nick
It eats rust but not a plastic bag!!:redface:
Been reading up on this stuff, it's not quite a miracle rust eater, still needs a bit of work...but if the results are anything like those pictures it's damn good!
This is the vinegar bath after 24hrs, the slight diagonal line in the middle shows where the left was in the bath....not very good :(

Well, here is called phosphatising liquid and can be bought almost everywhere, and is really cheap.
Don?t know the exact word in English.
When you apply it, the rust is converted in a white dust, and can be easily removed.
Looks like it's basically Phosphoric Acid, I found something called Naval Jelly which is supposed to be very good but sadly no longer sold in the UK...due to the acid content I think!

Found a much better way of getting rust off.....

Just a mask or you will be sneezing grit or in your case aluminium oxide for days to come
So I could have got some free nasal blasting done just by sniffing the oxide?
