View Full Version : Water Pump
I know the answer already but it doesn't hurt to ask....can the water pump be replaced without dropping the engine?
(No!)

Knew that would be the answer...but worth a try

Never tried, but surely it can't be done after taking off the pulley?
I have tried after removing the pulley wheel and its just too tight.

You don't need to drop the engine fully though do you? Just undo the drivers side and rear mounts and let it down on a jack. Or am I living in a false hope?
That's how it's done on the 'grale Steve.
That's right, it needs to drop a few inches, but not all the way.
Manual says the subframe has to come off but I know I can get the right amount of drop by undoing half of it  From memory the exhaust and prop need to be undone but that's about it underneath.

Hi Wrinx,
did mine 2 yearsago when i put new belts on,
its what steve said.
jack underneath and undo rightside top n bottom engine mounts,
and take the pulley whell off the pump too gives you more wiggle room i beleive thats the correct term :)
jack underneath and undo rightside top n bottom engine mounts,
Is that it? No removing the subframe???
Easy peasy then (for a Q4!)!

I've mounted my alarm some time ago and I was p... with that. Sensor that detects movement of the car is too sensitive.
Alarm is a no go as I need another connector
...bonus is I get to play with the Q4 again :)

Well.....finished the belts and water pump today.
Not a bad job to be honest...just time consuming
I can confirm that dropping the engine 25mm (undo the top and bottom engine mounts) will give enough space...although I did have to get naughty and use a crowbar to get the WP pulley wheel out
So none of that nonsense that the manual tells you!
